Amerongen castle lies beautifully between hills and Rhine river. With its square ground plan, its strict classical brick exterior and its formal gardens, it is one of the finest dutch classical castles.

Soestdijk palace was built as a hunting lodge for King-Statholder William in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the house was enlarged and converted into a palace. Untill last year, it was inhabited by the royal family. At the moment, it is empty.

Renswoude castle is a typical example of a 17th century hous that was meant to look like a 'real' castle. This was done by adding a large tower-like pavillion in the middle of the house and two smaller on the sides. The effect is very charming.

Zeist house was built as a palace for a bastard cousin of the royal family.

On the Vecht River, there are many beautiful 17th century stately homes to be admired. They were built by rich merchants from Amsterdam.

Heemstede castle in Houten is a beautiful classical house with a tower-like roof.
